Can Albolene be used as lube? – Albolene, being known as a great skin moisturizing cleanser and makeup remover, is providing its users with some amazing results. People love Albolene because of its beneficial effects to skin and praise it as a miracle anti-age and anti-wrinkles solution . It’s even being used as a weight lost instrument . But how appropriate (healthwise) is to use Albolene as a sex lube? We know, it feels good down there, all slippery and wet… But is it safe? Guess it’s time to do some research and find an educated answer to the question: “Can Albolene be used as lube?”
This article was initiated by our dear friend from Reddit community u/Xyb3uYxRHjlpYorocBZW, and we decided to give it a go. So, let’s go all in, check the ingredients one by one, and analyze how (un)suitable is DSE Albolene to be used as a lube for sex. Is it edible? Is it ok to be used vaginally? Does it promote the growth of candida? – Albolene is made of 5 ingredients: Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Paraffin, Ceresin, Beta Carotene. Are those ingredients beneficial? Or can they produce some nasty effects down there?… And more importantly, can Albolene be used as lube?

Back to the topic. Mineral oil, Petrolatum, Paraffin… These are classic ingredients of Petroleum Jelly. What exactly is Petroleum Jelly? Petrolatum, also knows as Petroleum Jelly, has been found in 1859 as a byproduct of an oil industry. In its crude shape, it looked like thick, black paraffin-like substance.
In modern days, product has a shape of colorless gel, without any fragrance of its own. This is achieved through several cleansing steps of crude oil. In order to produce petrolatum (petroleum jelly) the crude feedstock has to be severely refined, desalted, dewaxed and distilled .
Below is a video1 recommending the use of petroleum jelly, by Mayo Clinic. They associate petroleum jelly with benefits such as skin moisturizing, skin protection, good for eczema, chapped lips, cuticles, etc.
While some people clearly adore the effect and results of petroleum-based products, some are strongly against their use. The video2 below talks about cons against the use of petroleum-based products.
Now which one is true?
This website has a motto, which is “doubt everything”. We are unbiased, and we make our own research. Based on the research we create an opinion, but most of all, we try to provide enough data and information to our readers, to let them make their own mind. Does the video1 one speak truth? Or is video2 the more accurate version? Can Albolene be used as lube? We need to study some facts in order to find out.
Albolene ingredients analysis
Mineral oil – definition [source]:
Any oil refinery product that is liquid at room temperature, such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel, fuel oil, or lubricating oil, could be described as a mineral oil. Usually, however, the term “mineral oils” (sometimes referred to as “paraffin oils” or “liquid paraffin”) is reserved for highly refined by-products of fuel production.
Petrolatum – definition [source]:
A smooth, semisolid mixture of mineral oil and waxes; used as a lubricant and in polishes, cosmetics and ointments. It is a yellowish, fatlike mass, transparent in thin layers, and somewhat fluorescent. It is used as a bland protective dressing, and as a substitute for fatty materials in ointments.
Paraffin – definition [source]:
A waxy crystalline flammable substance obtained especially from distillates of wood, coal, petroleum, or shale oil that is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons and is used chiefly in coating and sealing, in candles, in rubber compounding, and in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Ceresin – definition [source]:
Ceresin is a wax derived from ozokerite by a purifying process. The purifying process of the ozokerite commonly comprises a treatment with heat and sulfuric acid, but other processes are also in use. Uses include: ▪ An alternative to beeswax in ointments ▪ Laboratory-supply bottles for small amounts of hydrofluoric acid, which were made of ceresin wax; this was before polyethylene became commonplace.
Beta Carotene – definition [source]:
A vitamin that acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells against oxidation damage. Beta carotene is converted by the body to vitamin A. Food sources of beta carotene include vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach and other leafy green vegetables; and fruit such as cantaloupes and apricots. Excessive carotene in the diet can color the skin yellow, a condition called carotenemia. Carotenemia is sometimes seen in infants fed too many mashed carrots and is a reversible condition. Beta carotene supplements have been found not to reduce the risks for cancer or heart disease.
How Albolene works & what are the pros / cons
In order for us to be able to answer the question: Can Albolene be used as lube?, we must determine its function first. Albolene works quite similar to other petroleum-based products, creating an impermeable layer on top of human skin, trapping all the moisture inside not letting it leave the body. It’s as simple as that.
What are the pros (advantages) of using Albolene for skin care?
- It works very well as a makeup remover. Since it dissolves makeup (the formula is quite strong), you can clean your face perfectly with Albolene .
- Albolene is used as a weight loss tool. It accelerates sweating on the local area of your body, where you applied it prior to exercise .
- When applied to the face, Albolene “locks-in” all the moisture. This makes you look younger, reduces wrinkles, while also providing softness to your skin .
All of the above sound pretty good, however there are some concerns and disadvantages of using Albolene.
Q: How much nutritional value does Albolene have?
A: None .
…You could see previously in the ingredient analysis, that 4 out of 5 ingredients are petroleum-based (mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin, ceresin). All of these are either oils or waxes – without any nutritional value for one’s skin. These ingredients are designed to lock the moisture beneath your skin (similar to pouring candle wax over your skin). With the 5th ingredient being β-carotene, which is the only ingredient having beneficial value to a human body (body converts it to vitamin A). However, your body will not be able to efficiently absorb β-carotene, due to impermeable layer covering your skin.
Q: How healthy is beta carotene in Albolene?
A: We can’t know, but it is possible that it actually isn’t healthy at all .
…To clarify. The purest, natural and organic form of getting β-carotene is by eating carrots, tomatoes, spinach, and other vegetables containing carotenoids. While in cosmetics and skincare, manufacturers are usually using one of the following methods:
* Extraction of β-carotene by solvent extraction method . For production process solvents are used. For example: hexane, acetone, ethanol etc… By using solvents manufacturers are able to extract carotenoids from a certain type of vegetable. Hearing of such chemicals as hexane being used in the process of extraction, does make me have a small doubt in regard to healthiness and final product nutrition value.
* Synthesis of β-carotene. There are three big disadvantages of producing β-carotene from plant / vegetable material. It costs tons plus it’s seasonable and geographically dependent. To get several grams of carotenoids, the several dozens of kilograms of plant material has to be processed. From about 50 kg of carrots input, they get only 2 g of α- and β-carotene output. These are the reasons most β-carotene nowadays is synthetically made.
Here’s a quote from 2014 study: Currently, more than 90% of commercial β-carotene is produced by chemical synthesis. Due to the growing public concern over food safety, the use of chemically synthesized β-carotene as food additives or functional cosmetic agents has been severely controlled in recent years. This has reignited the enthusiasm for seeking natural β-carotene in large-scale fermentative production by microorganisms.
With this we established that first 4 ingredients have zero nutritional value and no medicinal benefits for our skin, and that the 5th ingredient (β-carotene) is very questionable.
Q: Then how come Albolene provides such great skin results?
…Albolene of course provides visual benefits to skin, even if all ingredients are without any real nutritional value. This effect is achieved by “locking in” body moisture. Creating an impermeable coating over your skin traps in the fluids, thus making your skin look younger and softer. But this is however a short-term effect.
The same goes for weight loss methods that include Albolene. Your skin is producing more sweat than normal, since it want’s to cleanse itself and make path for internal moisture to come out. Your body therefore loses more water and you lose weight faster. However, it’s again just a short term effect, because as soon as you will drink some water and eat, your body is going to re-hydrate itself.
Q: Are there any concerns of using Albolene for skin care?
…Studies are pointing out some issues and possible health hazards that could potentially occur from long-term usage of petroleum jelly (when used for skin care).
* Concern 1 (Natural ability of human body to produce moisture): While the beneficial (aesthetic) skin care effects of Albolene can be noticed immediately, experts are warning users against using this sort of methods for skin care, since it may cause a human body to stop producing its own moisture naturally . The theory is that since you are systematically “locking in” the moisture, your body adapts and stops producing it on its own. This can result in never ending cycle of application, because as soon as you stop using, your skin becomes dry.
* Concern 2 (Your skin is blocked): Creating an impermeable coating you are blocking your skin. This might be health concerning for two reasons. First, your body can’t eliminate wastes (bad stuff starts to accumulate under your skin). Second, your body can’t absorb any beneficial ingredients. Basically, nothing bad comes out, and nothing good comes in .
* Concern 3 (Possible contamination with PAHs): All petroleum-based products can potentially be contaminated with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) . A natural component crude oil, from which petroleum jelly is made, are PAHs. Even though manufacturers that all PAHs are removed by refining, studies show this is not always the case . PAHs are carcinogenic, may cause skin irritation and allergies. This is why EWG has labeled Mineral oil and Petrolatum with “moderate risk” and “cancer limited evidence” tag. You can also see from the above table that that Petrolatum has “high risk of contamination with PAHs”.
* Concern 4 (Environmental an ecological hazard): Petroleum jelly is an oil by-product, which makes it an environmental and ecological hazard. Production of petroleum jelly disrupts wildlife, contributes to pollution, global warming and is counter productive towards goals of sustaining a healthy environment, which I believe everyone of us tries to follow .
* Concern 5 (Petroleum jelly is not edible, shouldn’t be aspirated and can’t come in contact with eyes): “If it’s not edible, it’s not good for your skin.” It is one of the many principles we’ve learned so far. Hydrocarbons also cannot be digested by a human digestive system. If you eat a small amount probably nothing will go wrong, but eating a full spoon of petroleum jelly may result in issues such as: abdominal pain, diarrhea, coughing… And if it is aspirated (enters your lungs), the consequences may be even worse: chest pain, coughing blood, night sweats, weight loss… Here’s a quote from medlineplus.gov: “If a large amount of petroleum jelly gets in the eyes or nose, or is used on the skin, the eyes, nose, or skin may become irritated.” – and here is a reddit article that proves what consequences can occur from using petroleum jelly as a skincare solution.
Latest research and studies are focused into development of production process that would assure a “healthier version” of petroleum jell. Below we can see an excerpt from a recent patent, that suggest a different approach: process for producing synthetic petroleum jelly.
All of the above statements and concerns are based on facts and studies. These information may indicate that using petroleum-based products as your primary skincare solution might not be optimal. If you want to improve the state of your skin, we believe better choice are natural oils with high nutritional value (coconut oil, almond oil, etc) with which you may achieve beautiful looking skin, while also assuring health benefits.
Albolene as a short-term skin care solution is very effective.
Albolene may not be the healthiest long-term solution.
We have analyzed the ingredients, and we researched for possible hazards of using Albolene for what it is – a skin moisturizing cleanser. We’ve seen people opinions supporting Albolene, and we’ve seen counter arguments, which are against the use of Albolene and petroleum jelly in general. But what about using Albolene as a sexual lubricant? We have yet to talk about that. In the next chapter, we will clarify: can Albolene be used as lube?
Can Albolene be used as lube?
Can Albolene be used as lube, this is the question. Based on the ingredients analysis and the functions of petroleum jelly, which we researched in previous chapters, we can now come up with some quality answers. We are going to take into account all the listed concerns, and we are going to break down our answers into different categories, based on which benefits should the perfect lube for sex provide.
Does Albolene feel good as lube?
We were thinking about how to score this one, and decided we gave it a yes after long consideration. Albolene feels amazingly thick. Anyone who prefers thick lubes over thin ones, will be extremely satisfied with how Albolene feels down there.
There is however the possibility of “burning” sensation. Albolene makes the local area where you apply it, feel warmer. So if you have sensitive skin, you might reconsider this one. This sensation occurs when you apply insane amounts and when you leave it there for some time.
Albolene could also feel good for a man but not to a woman, especially when vaginal intercourse is taking place. Vagina is more sensitive and traces of Albolene will stay inside even after sex.
Overall, we evaluate Albolene as an OK alternative to lube, if you don’t care about anything else except how it feels.
Can Albolene be used as lube for oral sex?
Based on its nutrition value being zero and based on the fact that there are health hazards if you ingest some of it, we advise you do not use Albolene for oral sex acts. The most dangerous occurrence that can happen, is if some of it ends up going into your lung system. This can be dangerous and toxic.
Ingesting small amounts of petroleum jelly, once, may be harmless. The petroleum jelly can act as a laxative and cause soft or loose stools or possibly diarrhea.
Ingesting it systematically may decrease the uptake of fat-soluble vitamins because they dissolve in the petroleum jelly and can’t be absorbed into the body. If it’s absorbed into the walls of your intestines, it may cause foreign-body granulomatous reactions and if you accidentally aspire, it may cause a lipid pneumonia [source]. Here you may also find the study: Pneumonia Due to Nasal Application of Petroleum Jelly [source].
Petroleum-based products were never meant to be edibles. Vaseline, most famous petroleum jelly product, has even been labeled with “For external use only” and similar warnings.
Many products are misused by users not following the manufacturers guidelines. If a product is a skincare solution for external use only, people should be aware that it was not made for eating, or any other kind of internal application.
Is using Albolene for vaginal intercourse safe?
Just as the manufacturer of a famous petroleum jelly product Vaseline stated [source]:
“Vaseline Petroleum Jelly is for external use only, and we state this on our packaging for consumers. We do not recommend Vaseline Petroleum Jelly be used as a vaginal lubricant and have not performed any testing to support this use. Vaseline petroleum jelly should also not be used as a sexual lubricant in combination with latex barrier protection, as it can degrade the latex.”
Therefore we believe that it is also not smart to use Albolene (which carries similar characteristics and ingredients as Vaseline) for vaginal intercourse. We base our opinion also on the study below.
This is a 2013 study where 141 women, aged from 18 to 65 were part of a study, researching effects of petroleum jelly when used as a lube for sex. One of the results of using petroleum-based products for vaginal sexual intercourse were:
“Women reporting intravaginal use of petroleum jelly over the past month were 2.2 times more likely to test positive for bacterial vaginosis.” – This confirms the danger of using petroleum jelly as your choice of lube.
This same research concludes that 40 percent of the women who used petroleum jelly as a vaginal lubricant had bacterial vaginosis, compared to 18 percent of women who did not insert petroleum jelly.
Can I use Albolene for anal sex?
Here’s an opinion from a user on Quora. The question asked was basically the same as we have here: “Is petroleum jelly safe for lubrication during anal sex?” And here is the answer:
Not safe as petroleum jelly is far too thick at normal body temperatures for use in anal sex and could cause tearing of delicate rectal tissues with penal thrusting during sex-leading to bleeding and infections.
Here’s is an article from bionity.com that talks about anal fissures. An anal fissure is a tearing or an unnatural crack, which usually happens as a consequence of stretching the anus. It is interesting that in prevention methods they write:
Lubricating the anal canal with KY Jelly or other water-based lubrication before inserting anything (ex: vibrator, penis) into your anal canal. (Petroleum jelly is not recommended because it can harbor harmful bacteria).
And as we could read in the table, describing all the ingredients of Albolene, we could have seen there is a high risk concern about contamination. Contaminated petroleum jelly includes PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) which are extremely toxic and carcinogenic. Basically every petroleum jelly has PAHs included, the only difference is, some have more and some have less. What is even more concerning is the fact that, there is no control over this [source]:
These trace contaminants in petroleum-based ingredients often readily penetrate the skin according to government and industry studies, and their presence in products is not restricted by government safety standards.
Based on these studies we conclude, that not only would using Albolene for anal feel less good as if you would use a proper anal lube, but it’s also unhealthy and might contribute to anal fissures and STI’s.
Using Albolene for sensual full body massage?
Can Albolene be used as lube for full body massage? – We do not recommend it. It is far too thick to be used for massage. Good massage oils and lubes are thin, which makes them glide easier over bigger surfaces. Also good massage oils are rich with nutrition and contain beneficial skin ingredients and vitamins, thus providing healing effects to your skin when absorbed.
Albolene is a petroleum-based product which does not get absorbed by the skin (easily) – many resources claim it does not get absorbed at all, but that’s not true – everything can be absorbed by our skin, its just that some things are absorbed with higher velocity than the others.
Petroleum jelly creates an impermeable coating on top of the skin and traps in the moisture not letting it exit the body. As a consequence your skin gets warmer, smoother, overall good looking for a certain time period. Do you really want a full body massage, which creates an effect of closing all your skin, preventing it from breathing?
Known effect of Albolene is also sweating. Applying it all over your body, will make you sweat insanely, which might be another thing to consider as why using Albolene for massage purposes isn’t a good idea.
For sensual massage, we recommend coconut oil, which provides lots of medicinal value for your skin. Coconut oil is fully absorbable and feels amazingly thin, while also being edible and healthy for digestion.
Can Albolene be used as lube in combination with condoms?
The answer here is a strong NO. Albolene is based on oil substances, which are known to dissolve condoms. Petroleum jelly, mineral oil, … those are ingredients that don’t work with condoms. You might also note at this point, none of the oils go with condoms (not even coconut oil, almond oil, etc. Oil and safe sex don’t work together.
If you want to use a lube that is compatible with condoms you should go for water-based lube type, or perhaps silicone-based lube. Water-based lubes (e.g. Aloe Cadabra, Isabel Fay, …) are compatible with all materials. While silicone-based lubes (e.g. Penchant Premium, Uberlube, …) work well with polyisoprene and latex condoms, while they shouldn’t be used with polyurethane condoms or other silicone materials (toys, accessories, …).
Video below shows how different oils break condoms [source: YouTube, channel “Bee Busy”].
I really got nothing else, can I use Albolene as lube just once?
Can Albolene be used as lube just once? Sure, go ahead. Based on our research nothing (serious) could go wrong if you happen to use Albolene as a lube once. It’s just not recommended – at least not by us. Albolene is a skincare product, moisturizer, makeup remover and that’s how it should be used. However, repeated use of Albolene as a sexual lube, may have its downfalls.
So, if you happen to be out of your favorite lube, but do have Albolene (or other petroleum-based product), you may just as well use it for all kinds of sexual acts. You might however end up with minor problems (irritations, burning sensations, etc.) or everything could go just fine. Just be careful not to use it when safe sex is involved, because petroleum is oil, and oil based products dissolve condoms.
We hope that with this article titled Can Albolene be used as lube?, we’ve provided some additional data and information that will help you decide, whether you should be using Albolene for your sexual activities or not. Albolene is overall an amazing product for the function it is meant to deliver. The results it delivers are fast and as described by the manufacturer. However, we believe, products such as beeswax and natural oils might be a healthier, nutrition rich solution with the same functions Albolene is delivering.
Albolene as Lube: Conclusion and recommendation
It is of course up to every individual to decide, but we conclude that the answer to the question “Can Albolene be used as lube” is a “No”. Albolene is not appropriate to be used as a lube. This is due to several reasons, which we did specify and argumented in the article body.
Albolene is to be used for what manufacturer has made it:
- it can help you lose weight faster by applying it on local area of your body before practice;
- it can serve you as a makeup remover;
- it can help you regain moisture to your face skin at very fast pace;
- while it is not to be used as a personal lubricant alternative.
In continuation we have prepared for you an alternative to Albolene. This is due to our findings, that Albolene itself does not possess any nutritional value, vitamins or antioxidants and simply just works as a barrier on top of your skin. This however does the job of making your skin look pretty and young, but it does not revitalize your skin with health beneficial ingredients. Long term effects of using petroleum-based products for skin treatment seem alarming to us.
Below is our recommendation, which you may try using instead of Albolene [link to Amazon].
Olive oil! Surprised? Olive oil is a perfect, natural alternative to Albolene which works great as a makeup remover, and cleanser moisturizer. In fact you may even use it for your private acts. Not only is it functional, it is very healthy. Olive oil is enriched with healing agents and will make your skin softer and smoother, while having therapeutic benefits in the long run. Results might not be as fast as with Albolene, but with long-term use you may achieve miracles. Just apply some of it on the cotton and wipe your face with it.
